Electric cooperatives are not-for-profit utilities that provide a product that is critical to society. They are often both the largest taxpayer and one of the largest employers in the communities they serve. Unlike some other large corporations, however, the product provided must be delivered to the customer the same instant it is produced, and the product itself can be lethal if not handled properly. Therefore, electric cooperatives are subject to state law and regulations in a wide variety of areas.

The Kentucky Electric Cooperative Association maintains a vigorous government relations practice to ensure that law and policy makers have a complete understanding of the unique needs of modern electric cooperatives and the communities they serve.

CO-OP CONCERNS

In addition to providing reliable, affordable electricity, Kentucky’s electric co-ops are committed to the communities in which they serve. Electric co-ops accomplish this goal through a variety of means such as economic development activities, safety demonstrations for school and community groups, and scholarships for college-bound students.

YOUTH TOUR

 The Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour is an annual, week long, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, that is open to select high school students whose homes are served by electric cooperatives.

Twenty-two of Kentucky’s 24 electric cooperatives participate in the Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour. Students interested in the Washington Youth Tour trip must apply through the electric co-op that serves their area of the state. If you have questions or need to contact the KAEC liaison.
