Experience Washington, D.C. with Kentucky’s Electric Cooperatives!
Sponsored by Kentucky’s electric cooperatives, the Washington Youth Tour gives high school juniors the opportunity to see their government in action, engage with elected officials and national leaders, learn about our nation’s history, and connect with peers from across the Commonwealth. Delegates also gain a deeper understanding of how their local electric cooperative powers and supports their communities every day.

If you’re a high school junior ready for an unforgettable experience, your journey starts with your local electric cooperative!
Each co-op manages its own application process, deadlines, and selection criteria, so you’ll want to reach out directly to learn how to apply and get all the details.
The Co-op Champions statewide leadership program provides Youth Tour delegates with ongoing opportunities to connect with electric cooperative leaders while encouraging continued civic involvement and advocacy beyond the Youth Tour experience.
Participants build valuable leadership skills, take part in community and cooperative events, and help promote reliable energy and cooperative values. The program deepens students’ understanding of the cooperative business model while fostering civic participation, energy education, and meaningful community engagement.

Each year, one student from Kentucky’s Washington Youth Tour delegation is selected to represent the state on the NRECA Youth Leadership Council (YLC). This unique, yearlong leadership experience connects students from across the country who share an interest in service, leadership, and the cooperative mission.
YLC delegates take part in hands-on leadership development, interactive workshops, and dynamic discussions with industry professionals. Through team-building activities, public speaking opportunities, and real-world exposure to the energy industry, students build confidence, strengthen their leadership skills, and form lasting friendships—all while gaining a deeper understanding of the cooperative business model and the impact electric cooperatives have in their communities.
