Representatives from electric cooperatives across Kentucky will meet with Kentucky state representatives and senators on Thursday, February 7 at the annual Legislative Breakfast hosted by Kentucky Electric Cooperatives.
This year’s breakfast is 8:00am – 9:30am in the Capitol Annex Cafeteria.
“Now, more than ever, it is important for Kentucky’s electric co-ops to make sure that our elected leaders understand who we are and what we do,” says Chase Crigler, Community and Government Affairs Director. “There are plenty of special interest groups who advance legislation that could impair our co-ops’ ability to consistently deliver reliable and affordable electricity, safely.”
While continuing to engage with established relationships in the General Assembly, co-op advocates are working to educate a relatively large number of House Freshmen. 32 of the 100 members of the Kentucky House are new. In addition, two new Senators also took office in January.
“It remains to be seen what legislation will be debated by the lawmakers in 2019, but it is crucial that they understand the co-op business model and our service to our consumer-members,” says Chris Perry, president and CEO of Kentucky Electric Cooperatives. “The time may come when we need co-ops to speak up on specific legislation, but it’s always a good time to speak up for the co-op program.”
The Frankfort Legislative Breakfast is in addition to the NRECA Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. in late April.
